If you could erase one goal from football history what would it be?

Gerard’s cup final goal not included!



Man Utd’s equaliser in the Payet Old Trafford game? Quarters of the cup, last season at Boleyn… could the cup have been ours?

Or is there a random one that affected you more than it should?

Gerd Muller in ET at the 1970 World Cup, England led 2-0 before being pegged back by zee Germans who won 3-2, great comeback but that Muller goal sank the English, if he hadn't of scored you never know???

Or

Not a goal erased but if England had scored against Spain in 1982 they would have gone through to the S/F in that 3-nation group of death, again Zee Germans piped England.

Agree with the below, a couple of devastating England endings, I mean real devastation. Must admit, I can't be sure I've ever felt as bad after a West Ham defeat, then again 2006 and the FA Cup pens loss to Arsenal in 98.

It's not the same with England now though, was gutted when we lost to Italy on pens and last year to France, but it didn't feel nowhere near as bad as the earlier stuff.

Of all the tournaments England came close to winning, I think that’s the one I would have enjoyed the most. A great summer.

Bending the rules massively with this one but i'd be interested to see what would have happened had Sol Campbell's (completely legit) goal NOT been erased vs Argentina in 1998. Holland probably would have done us in the quarters but you never know.

Other than that i'd probably go for Stefan Kuntz in Euro 96.

Sussed it - the correct answer is Ronnie Whelan’s 83rd minute equaliser at Upton Park in 85/86.

Gives them 87 points at the end of the season, and us 86 going into the Everton game.

So as the OP said not Gerrards goal, for me it has to be the German/Shilton/Parker farcical goal In World Cup Italia 90.
We would have won that tournament and it would have been one of the biggest feel good factors this country had ever seen. Imagine looking back with Nessun Dorma playing having won it.
Gazza life may have been different. I've never forgotten the disappointment of that night.

Are you talking about his goal against Middlesborough on the last day of the season? That's the one I was thinking of.

I was flicking between that game and ours on Sky.

None of the replays seem to show it, but I'm sure he missed the free kick first time so they let him take it again. Which is kind of cheating.

We still needed to win even if they'd drawn, which we didn't. But they were 2-0 up after 20 minutes and I'm sure that must have filtered through to us and affected our performance. I think without that goal we might have stayed up.

One in a penalty competition at a fair in Crediton, circa 1979.

About 100 people of all ages, shapes, sizes took part and if you missed your penalty, you were out, simple as that.

I got into the final, aged 12 against some bloke, I hit the post, he scored.

How about erasing John Ritchie's winner for Stoke in the 2nd leg of the 1971-72 League Cup semi final?

We'd have then won 2-1 on aggregate and gone through to the Final against Chelsea.

Talking about 85/86 I remember Alan Dickens in a book saying that one thing they all forgot about at that last game at Everton due to being so down was the fact that if West Ham had won the game they would have played at Wembley at the start of the next season in the Charity Shield because Liverpool had done the double. He said a few of those in that team had never played at Wembley.

The last season at Upton Park, there were a string of consecutive draws where we were winning, some with last minute equalisers) at a time when we were seriously threatening a top 4 finish, in the same season that Leicester ended up winning the league.

Chelsea 2-2 West Ham (89th minute Chelsea equaliser)
West Ham 2-2 Palace (75th minute Palace equaliser)
West Ham 3-3 Arsenal (70th minute Arsenal eqauliser)
Leicester 2-2 West Ham (90th minute Leicester eqauliser)

I wonder if we could wipe the Chelsea equaliser, could it have given us the confidence to hold the lead in the other games?

We ended up losing badly at home to Swansea later in the season which really killed our chances but this has the potential to be our greatest Premier League season considering the way things were going.

Djibril Cissé's goal in the 2006 FA Cup final meaning that Gerrard scored a wonder goal as a mere consolation.
